FaxZero is the best-known genuinely free fax service in the US. It has been around for years, needs no account, and for a short fax it costs nothing. We would be doing you a disservice to pretend otherwise.
So why would anyone pay? Usually for one of three reasons: the document is longer than 3 pages, the recipient is formal enough that an advertisement on the cover page matters, or the destination is outside the US and Canada. This comparison lays out exactly where the lines fall, using FaxZero's published terms as of October 2026.

We build Faxio, so treat our column with scepticism. And note what the table says plainly: for a 3-page fax where branding does not matter, FaxZero is cheaper than us, because it is free. For 11 to 25 pages, FaxZero's paid fax is also better value than two Faxio credits.
FaxZero's free tier, honestly
FaxZero's free fax is not a trial and needs no credit card. You can send up to 5 free faxes a day to the US and Canada, each with a maximum of 3 pages plus a cover page.
That is legitimately useful. A signed authorisation to a landlord, a one-page form to a school, a short letter to a utility — FaxZero handles these for nothing, and it accepts Word files as well as PDFs.
The trade-off is the cover page, which carries FaxZero branding. Whether that matters depends entirely on the recipient:
- Informal recipients — a landlord, a contractor, a friend's office — will not care.
- Formal recipients — a government agency, a court, a specialist's medical records department — are a different case. An advertisement on the front of a power of attorney or a tax form looks careless, and offices that receive large volumes of fax sometimes treat unfamiliar cover pages with suspicion.
The other practical limit is the page count. Many of the forms people fax most — IRS forms with attachments, medical records requests with ID, mortgage documents — run past 3 pages. Our guide to faxing the IRS walks through typical page counts.
Paid fax vs paid fax
If you are going to pay, the comparison narrows to FaxZero's $3.29 fax against Faxio's $2.99 credit.
| Your document | Faxio | FaxZero |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 pages, branding OK | $2.99 | Free |
| 1–3 pages, no branding | $2.99 | $3.29 |
| 4–10 pages | $2.99 | $3.29 |
| 11–20 pages | $5.98 (sent as two faxes) | $3.29 |
| 21–25 pages | $8.97 (sent as three faxes) | $3.29 |
| Outside US/Canada | Same send page, 100+ countries | Separate international option |
| Several faxes over the year | From $1.67 each in bundles | $3.29 each |
So FaxZero's paid fax wins on long documents, Faxio wins on medium documents and repeat use, and the free tier wins on short informal sends. Neither is better across the board.
A few other differences matter at the margin:
- Payment. FaxZero's paid fax is paid via PayPal. Faxio uses Stripe card checkout.
- What happens on failure. Faxio does not consume the credit if a fax fails, and retries busy lines automatically. FaxZero's homepage does not state a failure policy, so check its FAQ before relying on it for something urgent. Busy and unanswered lines are common — see why faxes fail.
- Delivery status. Faxio shows a live delivery status on the send page.
Where FaxZero is the better choice
- Short, informal faxes. Three pages or fewer, to someone who will not mind the branded cover. Free.
- Several short faxes in one day. Up to 5 free faxes a day.
- Long documents, once. 25 pages for $3.29 is excellent value; a 25-page document would take three Faxio credits.
- Word documents. FaxZero accepts DOC and DOCX directly; Faxio's website takes PDF only.
- PayPal. If you prefer paying with PayPal, FaxZero supports it.
Where Faxio is the better choice
- Formal recipients. No third-party advertising on your fax — the cover page is optional and carries your own subject line.
- 4–10 page documents. $2.99 against $3.29, and the free tier's 3-page limit no longer applies.
- International faxes. Faxio delivers to 100+ countries from the same send page; FaxZero's free and standard paid faxes cover the US and Canada.
- Repeat sending. Bundles bring Faxio to $2.00 or $1.67 per fax, and credits never expire.
- Failed faxes are free. The credit comes back automatically if the transmission fails — important when faxing busy government lines.
- Receiving. The Faxio Android app adds a dedicated fax number; FaxZero is send-only.
