A Chromebook is built around the browser. You cannot install traditional fax software on it, and there is nowhere to plug in a fax modem or a phone line. For most tasks that is a strength; when a form says "fax to," it feels like a wall.
It is not. Knowing how to fax from a Chromebook takes about two minutes, because faxing online is already a browser job. ChromeOS has everything else built in: a Save as PDF printer, a document scanner in the Camera app, and a PDF signing tool. This guide walks through each.
- Save as PDF from anything you can print
- Scan paper with the Camera app's document mode
- Sign a PDF with the Gallery app before you send it

Why a Chromebook has no fax option
A fax is an image of a page, encoded as audio tones and sent over a telephone line to a machine that prints it. That needs a phone line and hardware that speaks the fax protocol. Windows PCs used to come with fax modems and Windows Fax and Scan; Chromebooks never did, and ChromeOS has no fax software.
An online fax service fills the gap. You upload a PDF over the internet; the service dials the recipient's fax number and transmits the pages. The recipient gets an ordinary fax, and your Chromebook only ever did what it is good at — run a web page.
Step 1: Get your document as a PDF
Fax services want PDFs, because a PDF keeps the layout exactly as it looks on screen. ChromeOS can make one from almost anything.
From anything you can print:
- Press Ctrl + P.
- Change Destination to Save as PDF.
- Click Save and choose a folder — Downloads is fine.
That covers web pages, emails in Gmail, online forms, and receipts.
From Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides: open the file and choose File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf) (in Sheets, File → Download → PDF, then pick the paper size and scaling). Our Google Drive guide covers the quirks, like why downloading a Doc from the Drive file list gives you a Word file instead.
From an email attachment: open it in Gmail and download it. If it is already a PDF, there is nothing more to do.
Scanning paper with the Camera app
If the document is on paper, your Chromebook's camera can scan it.
- Open the Camera app from the launcher.
- Switch to Scan mode and choose Document.
- Hold the page up to the camera, or lay it flat if your Chromebook has a rear-facing camera. The app outlines the page edges; capture when the outline fits the page.
- Save the scan as a PDF.
Built-in laptop cameras are not great scanners. Use bright, even light, keep the page flat, and check the saved PDF is readable before you send it. If you have a phone handy, its scanner usually does better — scan there, then either fax from the phone directly (iPhone, Android) or move the PDF to your Chromebook through Google Drive.
Signing a PDF on a Chromebook
Many faxed documents need a signature. ChromeOS can handle that without extra apps.
Open the PDF from the Files app; it opens in the Gallery app. Google's help page describes Gallery's PDF tools: you can fill in form fields, add text, highlight, and use the Annotate tool's pen to draw a signature, which Gallery can save for reuse. A touchscreen and stylus make the signature look far more natural than a trackpad does. Save the file when you are done.
Google notes that a saved signature in Gallery is a convenience, not a verified electronic signature. Many recipients accept a drawn signature on a fax; some — certain government and legal forms in particular — want a wet ink signature. Our sign-and-fax guide explains how to tell the difference and what to do when ink is required.
Step 2: Send it from Chrome
- Open a fax service in Chrome — on Faxio that is faxio.app/send.
- Click the upload area and pick your PDF from the Files app. Faxio accepts PDFs only; you can add several and they go out as one fax.
- Choose the country and type the fax number. For the US and Canada, a normal 10-digit number.
- Add a subject if the recipient needs a cover page.
- Send, and watch the status move from Sending to Delivered.
There is no extension or Android app to install. A short fax normally transmits within a minute or so.
School and work Chromebooks
Managed Chromebooks — the kind schools and companies hand out — often block app installs and extensions. A browser-based fax service sidesteps that, since it is just a website.
What an administrator can still do is block particular websites, uploads, or downloads. If the fax page will not load or the file picker will not open, that is a device policy, not a fax problem. Use a personal device, or ask whoever manages the Chromebook.
Also think about what you are faxing. Medical records, tax forms, and anything with your Social Security number are personal documents; you may prefer to send those from your own device rather than one your school or employer can monitor.
Alternatives
Subscription fax services offer Android apps, which run on many Chromebooks through the Play Store, and some offer email-to-fax, where you email an attachment to an address like [email protected] from Gmail. Both require an account first and usually a monthly plan. They make sense if you fax every week; for an occasional fax, a browser upload is less setup. See faxing from Gmail for how email-to-fax works.
What it costs
Pay-per-fax pricing runs roughly $2 to $5 per fax.
Faxio is $2.99 for a single fax of up to 10 pages, with no subscription and no card kept on file. If the transmission fails, the credit returns automatically. Packs bring it to $2.00 or $1.67 per fax, credits never expire, and an optional $14.99/month unlimited plan exists for frequent senders.
Faxing from a Chromebook is the same job the Chromebook does all day: something in a browser tab. Save as PDF, scan with the Camera app if you need to, upload, and send.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Chromebook send a fax?
Not by itself. ChromeOS has no fax feature and Chromebooks have no modem or phone jack. You send the fax through an online fax service in Chrome, which handles the telephone connection for you.
How do I save something as a PDF on a Chromebook?
Press Ctrl + P, change the Destination to Save as PDF, and click Save. This works for web pages, emails, Google Docs, and anything else you can print.
Can I scan a document with my Chromebook?
Yes. The built-in Camera app has a Scan mode with a Document option that detects page edges. You can save the scan as a PDF and fax it.
Can I fax from a school or work Chromebook?
Usually, yes, because a browser-based fax service needs no installation or admin rights. Your school or employer can still block websites or file downloads, so if a page won't load, that is a policy on the device rather than a problem with the fax.
How much does it cost to fax from a Chromebook?
Pay-per-fax services generally charge $2 to $5 per fax. Faxio is $2.99 for a single fax of up to 10 pages, with no subscription and the credit returned automatically if the transmission fails.
